Day 1
We left a little later than we had anticipated. An early morning visit to Slimming World and the long way round drive to bypass the road closure right by the turn into our road can be blamed.
It was around 1120 when we left home. First stop would be Sainsbury's at Ashford to fill with diesel. With the range showing 160 miles (all that was left of our last French fuel) we wanted to be full.
Just over £107 later we set off for the M20/M26/M25/M3 and A303 journey.
Next stop at Cobham Services for coffee and Reggie to stretch his legs. McCafe the choice as their coffee is actually good and cheaper than other outlets.
The road was oddly quite clear. None of the jams we usually have between Cobham and the exit motorway.
Even the A303 past Stonehenge was free running! That was our next stop.
It was planned as lunch but it was getting on for 1430 when we parked up. This time we parked with other vans in the car park rather than the marked spaces round in the coach parking.
We had lunch in the visitor centre. Not cheap but the cheese and onion pastie was actually very good. Probably the best I have ever had.
Sadly, the visitor centre is situated with no view of the stones. Whilst we were there they announced the last bus was leaving at 1530... it's a long walk back. We didn't go. Reggie can't go on the bus.
The second to last had four passengers.....
From here Ohrex (the satnav/GPS) took us up to Bruton. A small town built around a public school (in English a posh non state run school) plus a road closure forcing us to go the long way around via Shelton Mallet.
We eventually arrived onsite just before 1725. Checked in. Setup on our pitch - Lower Oaks 11.
Amazingly, the spirit level shows us as level. No levellers needed.
We had a walk to the shop and the dog run area. Reggie not all that interested in his ball, more with new smells.
Dinner? Sausages from Waitrose, Gloucester Old Spot, potatoes and baked beans. When in Somerset, washed down with cider.
Checking out the facilities shows that they are more akin to a spa or sports centre than a campsite.
Tomorrow? Stay local or maybe look for a National Trust?
