Dad's Bike Helmet
Found an photo album of my Dad's and scanned this photo. It is me about 60 years ago in the back garden of our house in Chadderton in Lancashire. I am wearing my Dad's crash helmet and goggles and also his gauntlets. I still have it. Although after about 65 years since it was new, it has deteriorated a bit. The elastic on the goggles has perished and broken so I can't re-enact the wearing of it with them pulled up over the front of the helmet. However, that's not all. I have a 59cm head. How my old man got this on his head I have no idea. It can't have shrunk! So here goes: The helmet was made by "Cromwell" and "Made in England". Nothing else can be made out on the label as it has faded over time. It certainly had belt and braces straps. There are four press studs that allow some differences in the shape of the head and give about two inches of adjustment, plus a leather strap with a buckle ensure it stays on. ...
