Pathway 4G/Lebara - Setup and Test

Image
Pathway 4G and Mobile WIFI For a while we have struggled with wifi whilst away in the van.  It seems to have got worse more recently, and this may coincide with trading the motorhome for a campervan. Whilst the motorhome was also a big box on wheels, it was generally wood and fibreglass. Where the campervan is a metal box with a few holes for windows and doors. It's effectively a Faraday Cage that blocks the signal to the phone.  A few years ago when still at work and we had company mobile phones, there was a worry that they could be hacked and we were given phone cases that were Faraday Cages.  They worked. Phone inside and there was no signal and so it didn't ring. It worked very well. The idea of the Pathway 4G is that it uses a SIM card and is a router.  I ordered a Lebara SIM for the router. Lebara use the Vodafone network in the UK. I have my doubts about that as we had Vodafone before and it was terrible at home. Photo from Belmont Leisure linked website Am...

Mobile phone signals?

Is there anyone that can answer this simple question? How can the signal on my phone vary from "no signal" through the entire range to 3G and back whilst I am totally stationery? From my basic education I understand the concept of sound and radio waves. So how does it vary so widely when the phone doesn't move more than a foot (30 cms) in any direction. There are no objects moving that could mask the waves... E.g. An SMS message comes and is received. It is read but the user is unable to reply as the phone has no connection to the network. Irritating but how can this happen?

Vodafone

After call after call waiting in queue after queue to speak to a human call centre person my billing problem is finally sorted. By logging on to Facebook. Amazing.

3G?

Where would you expect to get the best 3G coverage on your mobile phone? Hythe in Kent Central London, say for example Islington On a narrow sea wall dijk off the coast of the Dutch coast called Breezanddijk? If you answered 3 you would be right! What sort of shit are we sold by the mobile phone companies in the UK? In the nationa's capital I get one bar at 3G, but on a 100 metre wide dyke in the Netherlands there is a full signal on the phone.
