On the Road Again!

We had two nights in Havasu.  What to do? The plan was to chill after a week of driving across the length and breadth of the state.  And do it was, View from our room We ate locally the first night but not before we had taken a drive across London Bridge and around the island it leads to.   The next morning we found a cafe/diner along the road, Peggy's Sunrise Cafe ( 1584 Countryshire Ave, Lake Havasu City)  was a great find.  Breakfast From there we headed north on London Bridge Road to the State park, and put off by the parking charge we went a bit further to a small parking lot.  We had a walk into the reeds and to a viewpoint  where we met some local people fishing.   They told us to try the beach area on the other side of the bridge.  After lunch, that's where we went. In Oatman we parked up on the right at the top of main street. Walking down the boardwalk we encountered one of the first donkeys.  This one was on the boardwalk itself and eating some flyers from one of the attractions. I guess printed paper tastes good to a donkey? Many of the shops had already closed and in need of a comfort break we headed to the public facilities. Dodging donkey byproducts is a normal occurrence but nothing could prepare anyone for the rest rooms smell. We had a look around the bric-a-brac stall next door and then over to the car park where there were a few donkeys and some foals (?). One with a sticker on its forehead saying "do not feed". We had a little lay in, ten minutes to be exact. And then packed the car but not before a walk around the motel car park to take pix of the old (and often rusted) cars that are parked outside each one. And then we were off....

The last hotel booking fell into place when my brother, Neill, booked us into the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook whilst he was staying there on his R66 trip. Coincidentally, before I emailed him, he had posted this card to us. According to Google maps, Scottsdale to Holbrook is 174 miles, but we will plan things to see en route. Such as the petrified forest and I'll be scouring the Rough Guide as well.

The problem with planning a trip some seven months before you go is that you start to build in more and more, make changes and discard some things.... My plan is to spend the second week "On the Road" with two night stops in Williams AZ for the Grand Canyon Railway and again at Lake Havasu to chill out before flying home are sealed in concrete. But that leaves a couple of other nights. He booked us in for the first night after we leave the timeshare in Scottsdale, so that's one overnight ticked off. We'll take earplugs! A bit of re-jigging and I have created another night to allow us to drive north of I40/R66 to the Navajo lands to Monument Valley. The loop from Holbrook via Kayenta to Flagstaff needs an overnight up there. ...
