The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) announces a new offer to help protect  bikers facing the expanding ULEZ charge.  MAG deal offers members a  risk-free method to check if their older bike is compliant. MAG urges  riders not to scrap serviceable bikes without first checking whether  they are actually compliant. MAG fiercely opposed the ULEZ charge for motorcycles from the day it was  first suggested.  Motorcycles help reduce overall emissions by reducing  congestion.  MAG proved that the majority of pre-Euro 3 motorcycles are  compliant with the actual emissions standard for exemption from the  charge.  Sadiq Khan relented and agreed to a system to allow individual  vehicles to be tested for their actual emissions level and registered as  exempt if they meet the standard. The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has formally requested a suspension of charges on motorcycles in the new London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) citing the flawed evidence used to justify the charge.  MAG is calling for a suspension to allow Transport for London (TfL) time to conduct valid research into emissions from older motorcycles and scooters. MAG wrote formally to Sadiq Khan in March, ahead of the 8th April launch of the Mayor's flagship policy to tackle air pollution in the capital. National Chair of MAG, Selina Lavender, cited a number of reasonable justifications for a delay in the implementation of proposed charges for motorcycles.  In the letter Lavender listed the following justification  for a delay: The implementation date for ULEZ is currently just 6 weeks away. The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has asked London authorities to allow time with bikers to prevent an angry, administratively nightmarish chaos over ULEZ charges for motorcycles. MAG met with former Chair of the Transport Committee on the Greater London Authority, Keith Prince AM, at London’s City Hall to seek a postponement for motorcycles from the ULEZ pollution charges for older motorbikes. This was supplemented by a formal letter to the Mayor, Sadiq Khan, requesting the postponement.   Reasons identified for the postponement of the charges include: •      The Mayor and TfL haven’t yet grasped issues relating to the introduction of the ULEZ charge for older bikes. This means eleventh-hour panic could lead to ill-considered, knee jerk decisions from bikers and also from policy makers. •      Postponing ULEZ on motorcycles has a tiny impact on emissions. The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has been working to exempt as many motorcycles as possible from the high Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) charges being introduced in London in April 2019. In a series of releases, MAG is outlining the progressmade with manufacturers in helping you to avoid charges, by proving your motorcycle is compliant with the emissions levels that have been set. On 16th October 2018 Bath & North East Somerset Council launched a six-week consultation on proposals to charge drivers of higher-emission vehicles, including cars, £9 per day to drive within Bath city centre.  In the wake of MAG’s victory in Birmingham, the Bath & North East Somerset Council is proposing, from the outset, to exempt all  motorcycles and mopeds from the scheme. Commenting on the proposals, Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for development and neighbourhoods, said: “Like many councils up and down the country we have to address NO2 levels which are harmful to people’s  health, and we’re being told by the Government do to that in the shortest possible time.” Councillor Mark Shelford, Cabinet member for Transport & Environment, added: “The council has looked carefully at other options, such as not charging higher emission cars, but technical analysis shows this would not be guaranteed to sufficiently reduce NO2 in the time available...

Following this announcement we read in the motorcycling press that the charge for motorcycles would be £12.50! Dear Stakeholder Thank you for taking the time to respond to our recent consultation. I can confirm that today the Mayor confirmed the introduction of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which will launch in central London in 2020.  This new scheme will significantly improve air quality across the Capital and so improve the health of Londoners. After considering the feedback from the consultation, the Mayor confirmed the ULEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the same area as the current Congestion Charging zone (CCZ) from 7 September 2020.
