SP26 - Day 7 & 8
Well, what can I say about Day 7? Not a lot.
With Potes and the Picos de Europa being scorched under 36°C temperatures and then rinsed every evening in thunderstorms, we were pretty much doing nothing other than sit and read.
Day 8. Where to go? My original plan was to take a turn around the Picos and then eastwards calling into a few "sights" and "beau villages" that had aires. But with an ageing dog we were looking for somewhere cooler.
It looks as though El Niño from the Pacific is causing the weather we are getting.
So we decided to cut a few places out and today head for Frias.
The village is called the smallest city in Spain.
There's a Camping-Car Park aire there and for €6 a night there's plenty of spaces and services but no EHU. Loos and showers as well.
On the way from Potes we found ourselves taking in a few passes and lots of winding roads heading towards Cervera de Pisuerga before heading eastwards.
Once we arrived we found there was no shade at all and despite being high in the mountains the thermometer was still over 34°C.
Soon after we arrived and let Reggie out, he started limping and holding his left foot in the air. After an hour or so we decided to look for a vet locally. Google to the rescue.
Mr Vet in Medina de Pomar around 30 minutes up the road opened at 4pm. So off we went. TomTom took us to the door and we arrived at 4.15pm. They could see him at 5.45pm.
We then headed to a local park area to have a late lunch and go back in time for the appointment. It seemed like we were the centre of disaster. Firstly, a boy cycling past fell off his bike. He was okay and thanked us. Then the old guy from the motorhome parked behind us fell off the pavement fell off onto the grass. The step down was about a foot.
The vet checked Reggie over and said the problem was his elbow. He checked him over and noted the heart murmur. Worryingly he said that it was about the level 4 of 4. He suggested when we get home we should get an ultrasound done. He's nearly 16 and the heat is a lot for him to cope with.
Altogether it cost €65. He had a pain killer injection and an anti inflammatory jab. We have also got a furher anti inflammatory shot to give him every evening via a syringe into his mouth.
We also found we had chosen the same weekend that the town was having "The Captain's Festival".
The music went on until 5am. It didn't sound very "Napoleonic" sounding more like "dance" music from the 80's.... Thud. THUD.
Tomorrow the plan is to head east again.
