Shrewsbury Town Trip - Day 1

Almost a last minute decision to come up to Shrewsbury this weekend.

We had enjoyed last weekend's visit to Colchester and Suffolk.  I get to go the football and Claire has a relaxing day without me.

I checked that Phil could take over the Arsenal ticket and then bought my ticket for the Oldham game at Shrewsbury.

Next, I checked that the Caravan Club CL at Betley Park had room. It costs £25 a night including 10kw of electric. Booked.

We set off around 10.30am. The TomTom route was via the south of London on the M25 to the M40, then M42 and M54....

We made good progress. Then with TomTom connected the traffic info showed a problem around the services at Clacket Lane, and again around the A3 junction.

Time dragged on. We shouldn't have been bothered by the M25 being closed eastbound where it turns north by the junction with the A21 and M26. Except it seems we were. No logical reason for both holdups. Gradually the time of arrival got later and later.

The heavy and solid traffic all the way to the M3. TomTom decided it was quicker to go that way, to the M4 via Bracknell. More traffic.

Some three hours after setting off we arrived at Reading Services on the M4.

Time for a quick salami roll and a coffee and away again. I had thought from here we'd turn north towards Oxford and the M40. Wrong. 

TomTom decided that Swindon and then across to Gloucester was the way to go...

It was dead on 6pm when I backed us onto the hardstanding pitch...

Driving in the UK and especially the South-East is a terrible experience.

Once on site I made a few journeys to the water tap with the watering can to top up the water. 

Dinner tonight will be spaghetti and the sauce from yesterday.

Tomorrow kick off is again 3pm. The CL owners recommended booking a cab each way as walking is about 45 minutes.

I installed the Veevo app and have booked cabs both ways as I did last weekend.

Roadtest - Suzuki TU250X

(Originally written and published on the old Geocities hosted SOC website in 1997)   With the UK Government thinking of ways to force commuters onto public transport on the one hand, soaking the motorist with the other hand - road tolls, commuting into City tolls, increased in Vehicle Excise Duty on top of another hike in petrol tax, the motorcycle couldn't be better placed to provide personal transport when you want it, in a more 'environmentally friendly' way. So when I was offered the latest addition to the Suzuki commuter range, the TU250X, I was actually quite looking forward to trying a bike that might fit the bill for the beleaguered commuter of the future.
