Easter 26 - Day 2 - Game Day.
The reason for coming up in the van for the Easter holiday weekend was for me to go to the football at Colchester United.
On Google Maps the walking distance would suggest at least 45 minutes to an hour walking.
I decided on a cab each way. I tried to book a couple in advance with no luck. They have Uber but they aren't reservable in advance.
It was Easter. It was Good Friday. Kick off 3pm.
When we checked in the young bloke that handled it said definitely a cab. I phoned the one on the site's info sheet.
The number took we to an automated system. I booked cabs in both directions.
Come 2pm, or a little before, we headed to the entrance and the cab was already there. So soon after 2.10 he dropped me off by the ground. The return pickup at the same place. All the updates about the cab were sent by SMS to my phone.
I had a walk to Wendy's to get something to eat for lunch but the queue out of the door was too long. I opted for Greggs instead. A sausage roll, a coffee and a four pack of white chocolate cookies.
The away fans entrance is about 20 yards from Greggs. But there's a 15ft fence in the way....
I followed some home supporters through the car park and back along the ground to when turnstiles.
The game was good. Oldham far the better team in the first half and deservedly a goal to the better at half time.
In the half time break, the Oldham players must have had cocoa and slippers, whilst Colchester must have been given a severe tongue lashing!
For most of the half they threw everything at the Oldham goal. Eventually getting a deserved equaliser.
Then a miracle. Against the run of play an Oldham goal. Persistence from Drummond chasing the rebound, a cross from Robson and a goal from the head of Taylor.
With Colchester pushing on, Oldham's third from Drummond on the break. Fondop forcing their keeper into a dodgy header, a ball heel to Drummond and it was three.
After the game the cab back was easy to find. And we were back. It cost a tenner each way. Plus tip.
That evening we discovered that the poor mobile signal was enhanced by balancing the phone, with the mobile hotspot settings on, on the blind in the roof light.
There's no WiFi on the site. And the Tesco/O2 mobile signal was poor.
