Where have we heard that before? 

Well, I remembered that the fuel cap gasket was a little aged and with the tank brimmed I had had a slight leak when on the sidestand.

The remedy? Buy a new rubber for the filler cap. I toyed with the entire cap. But as it is out of sight under the flap I decided not to bother and just get the rubber.
