UK26?
Decided...
Today as we were driving back from Dover in the van we decided that instead of a second European trip in the autumn, that we would stay at home in the UK.
Why?
It really boils down to costs.
In 2025 we renewed our Red Pennant European Breakdown and Travel insurance. It was cheaper in 2024 and 2025 than our previous cover with MAG Insurance for the travel (medical etc) insurance and RAC Breakdown insurance.
Sadly as of 2026 Red Pennant is looking for a new underwriter and is no longer offering cover. Existing customers are covered though. Our cover is until August 28th 2026. We would be going late September.... We are covered for the May 2026 trip to Spain (SP26).
If the Caravan Club can get a new underwriter to offer the same cover then maybe we will look at it.
If we don't take it up we will save approx £450 based on this year's price.
For a UK holiday we already have full medical cover through the NHS and breakdown/recovery with the Caravan Club.
In addition. By staying in the UK, of course, means that we won't have a ferry or Shuttle fare to pay for.
I have checked the various crossings and Irish Ferries came out cheapest at £286 return including £15 each way for The Regster.
So that's around £750 we will have to put towards the trip.
Where to?
The world is our oyster... Apologies to The Bard.
With more time rather than our usual long weekend breaks, we can look at maybe going further afield. We've not been to Wales at all, and not to Scotland for around a decade.
We'd like to do the Lake District as well.
Staying at?
We are members of the two largest caravan/campervan clubs plus the smaller Motor Caravanners' Club. So there should be plenty of sites and small CL's and CS' available. It's not until October in any case.
