Polarsteps App

Polarsteps

I have been using this app on and off for a few years.

When I started it was because friends in the biking and campervan worlds had been using it to plot their trips as they happened.

It is a love hate relationship. So many times I have started a new trip, entered the details and 100 miles later it had mapped nothing. I was apparently still where I set off.

So, I deleted the app. After being encouraged to try again I did for our trip to France and Spain in May 2024. It seemed to work but was heavy on the battery 🪫.

Although it's not accurate road wise it's more "as the crow flies", it's a good record of your trip. At each point you can edit and add a photo and a short description.

So after a few more failed trips I had another go today. It's not vehicle specific so I was used it when on the bike as well. One of the failures was the ride back from Assen to Home in July 2024. I was still at the hotel when I got to the ferry!!!

Today...

A short run across the Marsh to Romney Raw. This is a family run pet shop that specialises in raw dog food. Reggie has been on raw for many years...
Would I recommend the app? It's free. This is the Android version. I don't know if there's one for Apple phones.

The pictures I took as part of the test today....

On the bikes I use the Yamaha My Ride app. It records the ride using Google Maps and also provides some data on braking, acceleration and angles of lean, plus top speed.  The latter is best ignored or deleted....

Another app I was recommended but can't be bothered about is Travel Boast. It's not active and records nothing. You complete the journey by adding points and then dragging the lines between points onto the route you took. The outcome is a nice video. It's supposed to let you import a GPX file from your satnav, but I have never got it to work. Maybe try it again?
